With bridal season around the corner, it is time to get those last details booked. Unfortunately if you wait too long, you may not be able to book the makeup artist you like. Truly thank you for all inquires and bookings past and present. So sorry if I was unavailable when you inquired. With some parties I am getting requests almost 2 years in advance!
When booking your makeup artist, make sure they are a fit for you. We all have our own style. We all have a vision that is beautiful to us. We have our own philosophies when it comes to makeup. We all have our standards in how we operate.
I support anyone who is interested in venturing in to the freelance world. It will take a number of people before you get comfortable and it will take a significant amount of money. We are all artists and I applaud your courage.
My philosophy. Your wedding means A LOT to me. You have chosen me to deliver a luxury service with quality products. I have a very high standard in the makeup I produce and the highest amount of professionalism. Many people have no idea how much time is devoted to getting everything ready packed for the wedding day. Not to mention the travel and set up time before we even get started. At times we are on our feet six or more hours without stopping. I arrive early to make sure you and your party are ready on time. Appreciate your artist 🙂
I am certified. I am insured. I am respectful to you, your guests and your day. My products are high quality, well cared for and many disposables to prevent cross contamination to my products. My brushes are always sanitized. My makeup palettes are always cleaned. I literally clean all my palettes. Lets face it, I invest a hefty amount and the last thing I want is my kit to look dirty or unkept. It melts my heart when a photographer walks in and comments on the amount of cleanliness and organization of my makeup.
Trends are great. Trends come and go. Keep in mind that you will be looking back on your photos. The last thing any bride wants is to look dated to a specific time period. I will do a trend more for a special occasion or prom. When it comes to brides and bridal parties I keep it classic.
What does classic mean? It means you will be timeless. Your photos will not be dated. Yes big brows and many other things are huge right now. I may suggest dialing it back a bit for your wedding. I concentrate on accentuating features. Keeping skin flawless. Making you pop without being too overdone. My favourite saying. You don’t want your makeup to enter the room before you do!
One of my biggest inspirations for makeup was my mother. She was a young mom. She never over did herself and she was always beautiful. I look back on old photos. Even her and my dad back in the day, mom looked great! She was filling in her brows 40 years ago. She followed the natural shape of her brows. Not like today when you find yourself secretly saying oh yikes when you see a fair girl with big dark brows in a harsh stencil shape. I am observing not judging. You do you!
The majority of my clients have one common phrase. They rarely wear makeup. Moms too! No problem. I will not make you feel like you want to scrape your face off with a putty knife. Don’t get me wrong, I do love when my girls love makeup. For those beauties we turn it up but still keep it classic. On the other hand, I have clients that are stuck in a trend they were doing in high school. Chances are it was not a classic trend and it may need to be broken.

This blog is more about what I have discovered recently. Something personal that has opened my eyes.
I was diagnosed 15 years ago with Hypothyroidism. One of the most common autoimmune disorders. More commonly found in women. If you are not familiar with the purpose of the thyroid gland, its number one function is to run the body’s metabolism. If your metabolism is not running correctly, there is an entire list of side effects. From fatigue, brain fog, difficulty with memory, hair loss, dry skin, irritability, depression and weight gain. From a young age, I experienced a few symptoms. I had major irregular cycles, loss of the lateral part of my brows and still today I am always cold.
I was not at all surprised when the diagnosis finally showed up in my blood work. It was a year after the birth of my daughter. I was a young mother. Yes I could have very well chalked up my exhaustion to being a parent and working full time. We all know parenting does not have a snooze alarm.
My physician prescribed me a relatively low of dose of Synthroid. My symptom of severe dry skin was lessening. My hair was not coming out in clumps and I was feeling more alert.
Over the years and continual testing my thyroid levels, my prescription dose had increased 4 times. Where I stand now is feeling the effects of the extreme fatigue. Lack of go go go that I always had. Yes I do have long days and very early mornings. I feel as though I am not myself. Like I need to take a step back and try to figure out what is going on.
A gift to myself was a Mentorship with Alexandra Jamieson. Alex is incredibly awesome, check her out! She recommended I read a book by Dr Aviva Romm. The Adrenal Thyroid Revolution. Wow. I had no idea. I had no idea about many things. One in particular that stood out is was I can reset myself. Alex had recommended going gluten and sugar free. Major inflammation triggers. Inflammation of the thyroid is what leads to Hypothyroidism.
A major point that blew me away was it is extremely common for a person to start out with Celiac Disease. Celiac Disease can predispose people to develop a thyroid condition. There is a direct genetic link between both autoimmune diseases.
This makes complete sense. I have had issues since I was born in relation to sensitivities to foods and digestion. No one ever said anything about it when I was younger. I always dealt with it and accepted this is who I am. The symptoms have worsened over the years.
I am very excited to start over and reset. Recommended by both Alex and Dr Romm. With daily lifestyles and food choices, it is no wonder we feel extremely fatigued and run down. There are days I feel my wheels are turning but I am not moving. As Dr Romm states in her book “Eat for how you want to feel.”
Did you know that there are certain kinds of lipstick that contain gluten? That your daily skin care routines and makeup could be a red alert to why you are feeling like garbage. Gluten is a binding agent. It is widely used in food and cosmetics. That is why I jumped on board with Beautycounter. For my own self awareness and self care. I wanted to share this knowledge with my family and my clients. Offer safer and cleaner products while still delivering pro quality results.
I will be sharing and documenting my reset journey. Very excited to feel the benefits of the replenish and reset.

Acne Prevention & Mattifying Skin. My daughter is currently using this system. She is a competitive swimmer spending many hours training in the pool and sweating in the gym. Chlorine is incredibly harsh on the skin and so was her previous acne face care Proactiv. We discontinued her use of Proactiv last year. Chlorine in large doses creates havoc on good bacteria both inside and outside the body. She uses a number of natural products to help combat the effects the pool. Silver (incredible) being one of them. Unfortunately after taking off her cap, she is left with an intense breakout. She has had great results with Beautycounter. Her skin is clearing. It is not red or irritated. The moisturizer is keeping her skin soft and supple. Two thumbs up!
Advanced Hydration & Age Prevention. Ding ding ding! Here is my winner. Age effects us all differently. Our life style, environmental factors and genetics are all elements to how we age. Approaching 40 very soon, age prevention is something I have embraced. Along with joining a mentorship involving self care but I will touch on that another time. I have acne prone skin and so far no breakouts and my skin feels great. In the bundle you get the Cleanser, Moisturizer, Serum and Sleep Mask. You may not see wrinkles yet but the key is to moisturize to avoid them from coming. Not to mention the cold and dry Canadian Winters are horrible on your skin. Two thumbs up!
Advanced Antiaging & Hydration. This collection is meant for skin that is mature and showing signs of increasing wrinkles. I have heard all positive feedback from samples given out to clients. Being a makeup artist, I do get asked a lot of questions about skin care and maintenance. I have a number of Mothers of Bride ask me about skincare. This would be one I would recommend. Ingredients are safer and a little goes a along way with all Beautycounter products. Investing in your skin and selfcare is so worth it.
Male Skin Needs and Shaving. This is geared towards men. Men are relatively low key with skincare. Although when shaving they are exfoliating, men need a good aftercare cream on their skin. I bought the Counterman system for my husband. The kit included shaving gel and aftercare lotion. The lotions help reduce pore size and decrease irritation from shaving. My husband said it was strange for him to use a gel when he is used to shaving cream. His face was soft and left smooth. He had no redness or irritation. Two thumbs up!
Bana what? Bana who?
Let me explain. I recently completed my Elleebana Certification for lash lifting, lash tinting and brow tinting. Elizabeth Montgomery, owner and operator of The Lash Room in Niagara was the instructor for this course. Elizabeth was also the instructor for the Lash Extension Course I completed. She is a Certified Instructor by the National Association for Lash Artists. Elizabeth was an excellent instructor and incredibly knowledgeable.
What is Lash Lifting?
Lash lifting is a new and improved eye lash procedure that lifts and shapes natural lashes. The end result is an open eye with longer looking lashes. Think of it as your eye lashes permanently curled with a lash curler. You can have your lashes tinted darker to truly enhance your eyes. Yes the solution is very close to the eyes and no you cannot go blind. With that said, you want to make sure your technician is trained and using proper hygiene practices.
Lash lifting is a great alternative for those wanting beautiful lashes without the commitment of lash extensions. One 20 minute session is all it takes to reveal a lash curl that will last after swimming or a shower for up to twelve weeks!
How long does it last?
The lash lift results can be retained for up to 90 days. The lift lasts as long as the natural lash cycle. The hair shed cycle is different for everyone. Many salons have their clients rebook six weeks after service for a re-lift.
What is Elleebana?
Elleebana is an Australian Company. Elleebana developed the worlds fastest lash lift system. Using a silicone rod the lashes are adhered to the rod. Two steps of solution are placed at the base of the lashes and rinsed with water. The process is complete at this step and beautiful curled lashes will appear.
If you want to enhance the look even further, you can tint the lashes. Apply Belmacil tint to ensure a long lasting lift. Belmacil and Elleebana products work excellent together and are proven to last. Elleebana products are premium with little to no odor.
Elleebana lash lifts are an alternative for people that do not want the maintenance of lash extensions. People with autoimmune diseases that cannot wear lash extensions due to sensitivities or weak lashes may be a candidate for a lash lift. Elleebana is a gentle and quick procedure.
A consultation with every client is extremely important. A consultation reviewing medical history, current eye health, sensitivities or surgeries. If a client is pregnant and has never had an Elleebana Lash Lift before, it would be best to not do the lift. If there is a reaction, your pregnant client is unable to take medication to relieve the symptoms.
It is essential to have your client stop by for a patch test 24-48 hours before the Lash Lift appointment. You apply a very small amount of lift lotions to the inner elbow area. If your client has no side effects to the lotions on a patch test, you may proceed with the lift. If your client has super sensitive skin and a reaction to the patch test, it is in the best interest of the client to decline the procedure. ‘
The work environment for any procedure is required to follow infection control and sanitary measures. This ensures a safe environment for your clients and their health. If you have a spa bed it must be easily wiped down between each client. A bare floor that can be cleaned as opposed to carpets which can trap pathogens and dirt. Towels, blankets or any products used during an appointment must be disposed of or laundered before the next client.
Your tools, instruments and supplies should all be stored and cleaned properly. Your tools should be metal and cleansed in a medical grade agent and wiped down with alcohol. Products that are plastic must be disposable. This will keep your work space very clean and keep your clients healthy.
I hope this answers your lash lift questions.
I recently completed my training for Lash Extension Certification. I received my training through a recognized training provider and my instructor is NALA Certified. NALA stands for National Association for Lash Artists.
When thinking about getting lash extensions there a few things you should consider before having the procedure.
Do your research.
Is your Lash Artist trained by a Certified Lash Association Artist? Do they comply with sanitary standards? Do they have past reviews? Are they available for a consultation? Do you have an allergy to any adhesives or reactions with your skin? Do you have an autoimmune disease?
All questions above will play a large part in being a suitable candidate for eye lash extensions. The eye area is very sensitive. If you feel apprehensive about trying lash extensions, your lash artist could put a few extensions on each eye to see how you react.
What are Lash Extensions?
Lash Extensions are individual lashes that are applied with adhesive to your natural lash. One extension per lash. To suit your own lashes, your artist will look at the thickness and curl of your natural lashes.
If you have short and fine natural lashes, the artist will opt for a thinner lash extension. A heavy extension should be avoided being applied to this type of lash base because you are risking damaging the natural lashes. This could cause permanent damage.
Your first session with a lash artist can take up to three hours to apply the lashes. The lash artist is working with a clean slate. The artist is isolating one lash at time. You do not want to rush this process. If this process is rushed, you could risk improper placement of lashes or the adhesive not adhering properly. After your first session avoid getting your lashes wet for 24 hours.
Lashes will need to be filled two to three weeks after the initial appointment. Why? Your lashes have a natural shed pattern that is different for everyone. We lose natural lashes daily. The lash extensions are applied directly to your lashes therefore will fall out with your natural lash pattern.
To improve the longevity of your lash extensions, all face products should not contain oil. Oil will break down the adhesive weakening the bond of the extension to the natural lash.
Your extensions need to be cleaned! This is very important. Use a lash cleanser with a small dense brush. Eyes do not get infected from extensions. It is the lack of proper cleaning that will lead to infections.
DO NOT remove lash extensions yourself. Contact your lash artist and they will remove them for you. If you try to remove and pull the lashes off, you will pull out your own lashes and damage the lashes. You are risking permanent damage and may not have your lashes grow back.
The ideal work area for a lash artist is a room with a bare floor that can be cleaned easily. A spa bed or table that can be wiped down between each client. If a lash pillow is used, it should be covered with a clean towel that is laundered. A new towel is applied after each client. Any linens or blankets used go straight to laundry and a new set for each client.
Your lash artist will be using metal tweezers, isolation tools and a mirror. These tools will be soaked in a medical grade disinfecting solvent. After the instruments are removed from the solution, they are
washed. All tools are wiped down with an alcohol swab.
Your experience should be pleasant. Your lash artist has invested financially and many hours preparing for a career in lash artistry. On arrival to your appointment, you and your lash technician should complete a questionnaire and address any concerns that you may have.
Your end result are fuller longer lashes. Most people do not need to apply makeup because they are satisfied by the look that is achieved after having a full set of extensions.
I hope this answers any questions regarding extensions.
Tarte Cosmetics has recently spoiled us giving all these new makeup goodies. Like I needed another reason to love Tarte!
If you have never owned any Tarte products, you should. The reason I stand behind the brand is because the products are excellent. They are natural, vegan and overall a great company with stellar customer service.
Last year, Tarte launched one of the best concealers I have ever used. Shape Tape. This stuff is wonderful! Why? It is creamy but it lasts. It is thick but does not settle and make you appear cracky. There are some concealers no matter how you set the foundation, you can look like dried up mud under your eyes.
Recently, Tarte Cosmetics came out with Shape Tape Foundation. You can try Matte or Hydrating. Two choices make it great for any skin type. I love the benefit of having two foundations for my winter and summer foundations!
I ordered the Shape Tape Matte Foundation. It is thick like the concealer but it blends across skin effortlessly. I ordered the Paddle Foundation Brush to go along with my foundation. I love it!!!! These brushes can be tricky to use. The trick is apply foundation with the wand on your face. I dot foundation allover my skin. I take the paddle brush and work the foundation in the same direction on the skin. Treat the paddle like a paint brush. If you go back over the section you just blended, you will remove the makeup. These brushes are very dense and will create a flawless finish. The density can work against you removing the foundation. Practice practice!
Bottom line review is I loved the foundation. My skin felt supple but not shiny. My imperfections were covered but not caked on. This is a must for me. I absolutely do not like my skin to feel too heavy with makeup. This foundation was so great I hardly needed any concealer. I bought a colour a touch too light so I ordered another in a darker shade. I decided to keep this light foundation and use it as concealer for my clients! My skin is prone to breakouts. At the end of the day when I removed my makeup, my skin was great and it never any reaction what so ever.
Thumbs up Tarte Cosmetics 🙂
Like many Canadians both men and women, our dry cold winters can cause some major dryness to our skin. I am not sure about you but I fear my legs being exposed to anyone! The dryness causes an ultra ghost powder like appearance. This is SO NOT the look I am going for to say the least.
Recently I discovered some new products to get me through this harsh season. For me I am extremely cautious with anything that I apply to my face. I have very sensitive skin and I can break out at the drop of a hat.
My facial cleansing routine follows as this. I wash my face morning and night using Cetaphil for Sensitive Skin. I immediately moisturize my skin. In the morning I moisturize with Tatcha Water Cream. I love this product. It is non greasy and very light. It absorbs in to the skin almost instantly and does not create a barrier when you apply your makeup.
At night I use a sleep moisturizing mask. The mask is super nourishing for stressed winter skin. My favourite right now is Laneige Water Sleeping Mask. It is light, non greasy and you feel recharged in the morning. You can find both of these products at Sephora.
Moisturizing your face, neck and body is very important. This will keep you looking younger. Yes it is true. When skin becomes dry and tired, it starts showing age and wrinkles will occur.
Please remember to exfoliate your face and body once a week if you can. Find a gentle wash that contains some type of dissolving bead to clear off the dead skin cells. A line that I really love is Demalogica. My favourite scrub right now is the Blackhead Clearing Scrub. It smells so fresh and my skin feels so incredible after. Apply moisturizer immediately after.
I find what works best for me to apply my body lotion immediately after I step out of the shower. This is when your skin will absorb the lotion the most. All time favourite body lotion right now is the Sol De Janeiro Bum Bum Lotion. OMG! It makes your skin feel like butter and smell is incredible!!! The smell reminds me of summer. Kind of a perk to the sucky winter season.
Don’t forget your feet! Yes we have all gone down that road where our feet get dry and they can be used as a self defense weapon! Now if you are not sleeping alone and do not want to cut your partner with your feet try this. Give your feet a nice soak. You can feel free to add balms or whatever you like to the water. Then exfoliate your feet with a pumice stone. I do this at night and I saturate my feet with Vaseline and quickly put on socks. I know it feels weird but trust me, your feet will thank you!
Unfortunately these up and down temperatures followed with dry indoor heat make us dry as a desert but a few helpful tips to you through!
